In this masterclass, we taught you all about the equipment in your yellow case.

Filming Masterclass - Reporter Style - Handheld filming

Handheld

While shooting handheld, make sure that:

  • Your shot is stable
  • Your composition looks good

Reporter microphone

You should use a reporter mic:

  • Outside
  • Indoors, when there's a lot of background noise
  • Use a windshield to prevent wind from damaging your audio
  • Always check the input levels before you press record

Pin microphone

You should use a pin mic:

  • Indoors, when there's little to no background noise
  • Never outdoors
  • Always check the input levels before you press record

Make a loop!

When using a pin mic, you should make a loop.

  • Make sure the mic is facing in the right direction
  • Hide the loop behind the fabric
  • Clamp the wire between the alligator clip and the fabric

You now look professional, and will record clean audio.
